Note: This post is part of an ongoing blog series called #costamesa365 where the author is striving to shop only* in her city of Costa Mesa, for a year.
“Hey honey, let’s spruce up the house a bit, this spring.”
“Great! I’ll start saving!”
…
“Hey, what’s that weird noise? Did you hear something?”
Ain’t that just the way of it?
You decide to invest a little money and time – fixing up some things around the house – and the moment you do… everything else breaks! Grrrrrr.
Such was the case with my daughter’s bedroom ceiling fan. Like Murphy’s Law – or the movie, Up – no sooner had we filled our money jar for upgrades, then we’re cracking into it for repairs.
So my kid’s fan started making this unsettling, grinding noise – just as the days are starting to warm up.
Turns out, the fan’s motor is shot.
Now while we can technically spend non-Costa Mesa dollars on our kids (see footnote at the bottom of this post for details,) we still try our very best to stick to #costamesa365 “Costa Mesa only” spending.
I wasn’t very hopeful.
I mean, if I couldn’t find a bookstore in Costa Mesa, ceiling fans are probably online-only, too. Right?
Oh, how wrong I was!
Turns out, there’s at least one brick-and-mortar, ceiling-fantopia, here in Costa Mesa. It’s called Light Bulbs Etc., located on the corner of Newport Blvd. and Broadway.
Even if you’re not in the market for lightbulbs, ceiling fans – or lamps of any kind – you should still go check it out, because that place is really cool!
Who knew there were so many fun, funky, creative, artistic lighting fixtures in this world?
My family spent at least an hour, wandering the Light Bulbs Etc. aisles. We were awed by just how many ways we humans can deliver electric light. The options!
Eventually, we left with a nice, little ceiling fan / lighting combo for my daughter, and a beautiful, new porch light for our home. (The porch light was already on the “spruce up” list, so when we found one we loved, we pounced!)
I’m sure more unexpected repairs are in my near future, as we head into month five of #costamesa365. But it’s nice to know that there are local options when Murphy comes calling. I can still support Costa Mesa, even as emergencies come up. Yay!
…
Hey, did you hear something? ♥

*We will always start by shopping / looking in Costa Mesa, first. But if we really need something and an alternative is nowhere to be found in Costa Mesa, we’ll stray. Also, as parents, we’ve decided that certain kid-related things (mainly educational) will need to remain baked in.
